Facial Massage - Why should it be a part of your everyday routine?

An ancient technique with a caboodle of fans - facial massages have made quite a roar amongst the masses recently! But are you doing it right? Let’s figure that out.

Benefits of Facial Massages

  • Reduces the Symptoms of Aging - Regular facial massages can help in reducing fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and dark spots. It will also help in boosting skin collagen by increasing blood circulation and improving the elasticity of the skin.

  • Helps Reduce Acne And Scars - Massaging your face helps in moving the lymphatic fluid which is responsible for flushing out the toxins and other waste materials from your body. This makes your pores clear. Moreover, regular massages can also help in minimizing acne scars, thereby improving the overall texture of the skin.

Note: Avoid being aggressive or using harsh exfoliators while massaging your face.

  • Detoxifies the Skin - The pollution and dirt seep deep into pores and make our skin dull. A good massage can help in clearing up the dirt, whiteheads, excessive oils, etc from the skin and unclog the pores thus keeping it radiant, healthy and clean.

  • Reduces Tension - Our face has approximately has 40 muscles that are responsible for facial expression. When we’re stressed or tired, our face becomes tender. A good facial massage reduces tension, increases circulation, and helps your body to relax.

  • Relieves Pain -  Stress, anxiety, and headache can affect the facial muscles but a simple face massage can help in relaxing the muscle pain, it also reduces the stiffness in the muscles.

Pro Tip: Do it every day at night to release muscle tension.

So, it is imperative that facial massages, if done in the right manner, can have a positive impact on your skin as well as your mental well-being.

But how to do it right and get visible results? Ayurveda, the oldest healing science, teaches us that. Keep on reading to unravel how beautifully Ayurveda explains the facial marma points and how to stimulate them to get the healthy skin you have always desired.

10 Steps of giving yourself a Face Massage

Marma points, as described in Ayurveda, are these specific points in our body that, when stimulated, can activate energy channels in different organs and systems.

Massaging your facial marma points is a form of Abhyanga or self-massage that can be done on your own. Focusing on our face, our face has about 10 marma points. Keep reading to know about them.

Where are these marma points located on our faces?

As we understood that marma points are really specific, so it is very important to know their exact location for the best possible results -

  • Temples,
  • Lower eyelids, above your cheekbones
  • The junction between the nose and eyebrows on the lower, inner part of the ridge of the eyebrow
  • The corners of the mouth
  • Third eye
  • The external corners of the nose
  • Centre of cheekbones
  • Between the nose and upper lip
  • Centre of the chin
  • Crown of the head

How to perform Ayurvedic massage on marma points?

You may use any essential oil of your choice for an Ayurvedic massage. You can use Ayurvedic Origin's Facial Oil Duo.

Here is a step-by-step method to perform Ayurvedic massage on facial marma points:

  • Use both palms and lightly massage upwards from the collarbone to the chin.
  • Place the index finger at the cleft just above your chin. Place your middle finger below the chin. Now, move the fingers upward from the jawline towards the right ear.
  • Repeat the same on the left side.
  • Use index fingers to massage the marma points on the cheeks. Gently massage from the chin to the nose along the smile lines and then, massage both the cheeks upwards from the edge of the mouth to the temples using your palms.
  • Place the ring finger just beneath the eyebrow on each side where it meets the bridge of the nose and glide it outwards using a light touch. Follow the eye socket beneath and around each eye slowly coming back to the starting point.
  • Now rub the third eye using the middle fingers and the index finger from each side of the nose. Massage along the length of the nose as you continue to the middle part of the forehead. This site is called the 'third eye' or the 6th chakra.
  • Now, rub your forehead by placing your hands on the crown of the head and moving back and forth gently but steadily.
  • Using the ring and the middle finger of one hand, massage the top of the nose bridge between the eyebrows to the hairline.
  • Sweep the fingers of your right hand from left to right along the forehead, and then, sweep the fingers of your left hand from right to left along the forehead.
  • Finish by rubbing all the points of marma using the middle fingers of both hands.

It is very crucial to understand that you’re letting a product seep into your skin every day. So you should focus on using clean, natural, and premium products as the wrong ones can have long-term negative impacts.
