Can Stress Really Impact Your Skin?

Shayla has a companion whenever she has a presentation to give, her pimple!

Tina’s skin flares up when her personal life is in shambles.

It might have happened to you too! Have you ever noticed? If yes, then let us break it to you that it’s not just in your head.

Get ready to feel at least a little validated cause it is true that your skin has the tendency to act up when you are under stress. How does it happen? Keep reading to discover!

The science behind it..

An over or undersupply of the hormones that are produced due to stress leads to free radical productions that, in turn, lead to an imbalance of Ayurvedic Doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

One of the primary stress hormones is Cortisol, which when increased, can make the skin misbehave in whatever way it’s prone to misbehaving. As per Ayurveda, this is seen as a Vata (air) and Pitta (fire) imbalance that we really call an inflammation.

We keep hearing the buzz, but what really is “inflammation”?

Simply put, it is your body’s response to a perceived threat to health such as viruses and pathogens. But, sometimes it can be just an overreaction to harmless things such as allergies or in our case - stress!

Sadly this overreaction aggravates skin concerns - stress rash, stress bumps, redness, skin acne, and even more.

These flare-ups can even make your pre-existing serious skin issues even worse. “I have eczema and whenever I have got a lot of pressure at work, my eczema starts acting up and I get patches of dry, itchy, and inflamed skin!”, says 40-year old Linda.

Did you know?

Psychodermatology is a field that addresses the impact of an individual's emotion as it relates to the skin!

What can you do about it?

Of course, we can’t let you “stress” about your skin concerns CAUSED BY STRESS! So, here are a few things that can help.

If you have redness caused by stress - Cut a piece of Aloe vera and rub it on the irritated area!

AO’s Pro tip - Use minimal skin products when your skin is acting up due to stress because the skin reduces the ability to repair itself and overuse may hamper the skin’s altered barrier and make the situation worse.

If you are experiencing dryness - Use a natural homemade scrub using oats, honey and water and exfoliate your skin twice a week.

If you are a victim of wrinkles and premature aging - We’d suggest you perform facial massages using a good facial oil, twice a day!

Use Ayurvedic Origin’s Day and Night Duo that will help to increase circulation and pump oxygen to the facial muscles and tissues, making the skin look healthier!

You’ve probably heard your grandma shouting from her chair to calm your muscles when you are frowning? “No, Grandma! It doesn’t work like that!”

Turns out it does! Excessive stress can cause wrinkles in the form of pronounced lines on the face and neck, as more blood is pumped to the heart and lungs when the body is under stress, leaving the skin with inadequate blood and oxygen.

Now it may sound obvious but, the crucial key to altogether keeping the problem in check is to manage your stress. Take a day off, get enough sleep and learn to pause..
